In recognition of the role of the photobook in contemporary visual culture, Athens Photo Festival will present an exhibition dedicated to the form of book and invites artists and publishers from all over the world to submit their books for consideration.

Athens Photo Festival will present an exhibition dedicated to the dissemination, understanding, and appreciation of the photobook and welcomes artists and publishers worldwide to submit their books for consideration.

The selected books will be displayed during the Athens Photo Festival 2022 at the Benaki Museum / Pireos 138 in Athens. In addition, to provide access to the photobook archive via the Internet, the selected books will be featured online on the Festival’s website.

Our aim is to promote and showcase a wide variety of photobooks. We are interested in photobooks independently or commercially published, including handmade, self-published, book dummies, zines, limited-edition publications, and other printed matters. Books that feature the work by various artists are also eligible for submission.

All books must be postmarked no later than 18 May and should arrive no later than 30 May 2022.

There is no fee for submitting your book.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND RULES

You can submit your book as an artist, photographer, self-publisher, or publisher. We ask to see a physical copy of the book as the production and execution of the publication are aspects that will be taken into consideration for the selection process. In addition, please feel free to provide relevant information along with the book if you like. All book submissions must be shipped prepaid.

You may submit more than one book, however, each entry must be submitted with its own completed submission form.

If you would like your book to be returned to you, you will be required to cover the full return postage. Because of the number of books we receive, we can not be made responsible for any shipping costs. Requests should be sent no later than two months after the end of the festival, to contact@hcp.gr. Payment can be made using Paypal.

Books will be entered into the Hellenic Centre for Photography library for future shows and as a resource for research. The library catalog will be soon available online at www.PhotoBookAthens.com.

WHY SHOULD YOU SUBMIT TO THE ATHENS PHOTO FESTIVAL 2022?

More than 35 years after its founding, Athens Photo Festival, maintained and enhanced its standings as the leading international festival of photography in Southeastern Europe, and reinforced its commitment to improving Athens reputation for being a premier photo destination for interstate and international visitors.

The mission of the Athens Photo Festival is to provide a platform for artists and photographers to make new connections and reach the widest possible audience for their work. Last year’s international open call attracted submissions from all over the world, with more than 90% of the submissions coming from outside of Greece. The final selection included 102 artists from 35 countries.

Athens Photo Festival is one of the most visited photography events in Europe. The evolution of the audience over the past editions proved a success, attracting over 60.000 visitors. The main program will take place from 8 June to 24 July 2022, at the Benaki Museum, one of the oldest and most prestigious museums in Greece. Athens as an emblematic place of the fast-changing global situation provides a significant artistic and intellectual context where questions about the complexities of today’s world can be raised and discussed.

Over the past few years, the Festival has expanded steadily, with more international guests from more different countries attending each year. Among the guests are directors, artists, curators, and art professionals from all over the world.
