‘Extended Play’ incorporates handmade ceramics and personal objects into studio photography. The arrangement of these still-life photos is made up of objects alone or bound together with ropes, based on the art of Shibari, a style of bondage. Shibari is a method of restraint, the state or practice of being physically restrained, as by being tied up, chained, or put in handcuffs for sexual gratification. Unlike the authentic meaning, I am using the rope here to expand the given composition of the objects. By tying them together, I am creating a new order and intensifying their synergy. Materials get mixed and collaged into a new thought structure – found objects paired with floral elements and parts of the body. While these photographs implicate a sexual component, they also play with the matter of the relationship between sculpture and photography.
