This series was inspired by the reading of «L’été Grec» from Jacques Lacarriére.
This book had already led me to travel in Greece a few years ago, but from these
travels I didn’t bring back any good image. Sun, sea, contemplation (and that’s a
lot) were enough to fi ll our days. We went from island to island with Sylvie, at the
mercy of the encounters and of our desires.
In 2005, during the summer, I read this book again and a collection of fragments
of poems written in the Cyclades 600 years before our era. In September, we went
back to Athens and caught the fi rst boat departing from Piraeus who led us on
the fi rst of the three islands of our stay, Serifos (the two other ones were Sifnos
and Milos). I brougt a brush and a pot of paint (biodegradable) in order to inscribe
on the landscape fragments of ancient poetry, looking for a way to visually link
ancient Greece and contemporary Greece and to give back to the Cyclades what
they had inspired.
