Noel Jabbour is a Palestinian photographer born in Nazareth in 1970. The images
of the series ‘Palestinian Interiors’ are photographed in the refugee camp Aqbat
Jaber, near Jericho and in Hebron and Jerusalem. In this series Jabbour selects
sections of humbly adorned walls of Palestinian homes. She captures the images
and textures that stand in for the absent inhabitants of these dwelling places, who
insist on expressing their personal and collective identity, as well as their distinct
aesthetic sensibilities. Jabbour exposes the intimate space of the individual
Palestinian, a sight rarely seen by Western viewers, who are more accustomed to
seeing dusty street scenes often seething with violence and confl ict. Thus, she
challenges the collective, stereotypical view of Palestinians as either terrorists or
victims and insists on reclaiming their human individuality.
