‘Masks & Τhe Oceanic’ is the latest solo show by Alexis Vasilikos that deals with two juxtaposing realities. On one hand ‘Masks’ is a series of highly processed abstract photographic works, a series of meta-images that stand between traditional analogue photograms and abstract painting. They are composed by photographic material such as glitches, scratches, noise or light. Textures that usually photographers remove when editing the images and are usually seen as imperfections or waste become here the primary material for these highly abstracted photo-paintings. On the other hand ‘The Oceanic’ series is a series of heavily manipulated images of landscapes that are referencing to Romanticism and revolve around the idea of the oceanic feeling, a phrase coined by Romain Rolland to refer to the sensation of being one with the universe.
