Ancient Greeks used the term in a pejorative way to refer to foreigners who’s language sounded like a incompressible babble (bar-bar-,like blah-blah). Through History, ethnology and traditional anthropology, with an already outdated and Eurocentric view of primitive societies, called barbarism to a stage of cultural evolution intermediate between wildness and civilization.
