‘Novogen’ is a project focusing on the eponymous chicken, a special breed of commercial layer, which was developed to use its eggs in the production of pharmaceutical products such as vaccines. Through the investigation of the industrialized farming of the Novogen White Light chicken, Szalai’s work raises questions regarding technology and man’s relation to nature. At the same time, the project uses the chicken in a metaphorical way and thus, it highlights the interference between the utilitarian treatment of the Novogen chickens and the pure economic concept of human life. The core of the work is formed by an installation of 168 individual chicken portraits, supplemented by a series of photographs documenting the process of the vaccine production. A selection of extracts from the management guide and the marketing material of the Novogen White Light is also part of the project.
