The pictures in this work in progress are part of a personal documentary. I photograph my partner’s family in their home, in a provincial town in northern Greece, and in their house in a nearby village. In our visits, in these family gatherings, I try to depict familial moments through the point of view of a participant observer. I use the distance that the camera allows me to capture instances of intimacy but also snapshots of individuality, and maybe otherness, within family relationships, while being part of the whole situation. In some rare moments, an instance of the uncanny emerges within what seems to be a perfectly familiar site, the home and family life. In my attempt to tell a version of family life I often blend together the style of staged photography with snapshots of a loose narrative and documentation.
