The Athens Photo Festival 2015, came to a close on Friday 31 July 2015. Thanks in part to the eclectic mix of exhibitions from around the world, its overall range of events, and its diverse programme, as well as numerous public and networking events, we celebrated one of our most successful years up to date.
The exhibitions reflected the diversity of contemporary photographic practice, presenting recent works by 156 established and emerging artists from 39 countries, 12 multimedia projects and a wide selection of photobooks.
The past edition of the Festival, marked the start of a new era in the event’s growth. This ambition is reflected in the move to a new venue, affording a new identity and new possibilities. The main programme of the Athens Photo Festival was held at the Benaki Museum as well as, on a new date, throughout the months of May to July 2015. The new move, makes the Festival experience even better, and provides the opportunity to attract a growing number of international visitors.
Reframe Memory
97 Artists from 37 Countries
The 2015 main programme, in response to the theme of Reframe Memory, was focused on the complex interconnections between memory, time and identity, exploring and exposing the dialectical relationship between past and present. Using facts and insights from history and the current and changing socio-political context globally as a starting point, the act of reframing generates new perspectives that enable new combinations of imagery and meanings of the past that help us navigate the present.
Memory Lab
Photography Challenges History
The European Month of Photography introduces Memory Lab: Photography Challenges History, a joint exhibition that addresses the theme of photographic memory, recalling the painful events and aftermaths of the major conflicts that marked Europe in twentieth century. How contemporary photography provides a version of the past in a dialectical relationship with the present, featuring images of ruins on the landscape, political tensions, implicit violence, power, ideology and vanity. Athens Photo Festival is a member of the European Month of Photography, a network comprised of photography festivals located in eight European capitals (Athens, Berlin, Budapest, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Paris, Vienna).
Recorded Memories
Europe. South East.
The exhibition Recorded Memories – Europe. Southeast invites to a journey – in pictures – through eleven countries in Southeastern Europe. The view of the region’s shared past, restricted as it is by national attitudes, finds itself confronted by the points of view of the others in each case, prompting a reassessment of the present. The result is a remarkable collection of works (photographs, videos and installations), which confronts the viewer with different attitudes, approaches and evaluations.
The PhotoBook Exhibition
Celebrating the growth of the photobook within photographic practice
In recognition of the increasing importance of the photobook within contemporary photographic practice, Athens Photo Festival is introducing a new specific exhibition dedicated to the form of book. The Festival is pleased to present a selection of over 370 new photobooks from all over the world, providing an opportunity for the audience to explore the diversity of contemporary photographic books.

Young Greek Photographers 2015
Annual platform for emerging artists
The Young Greek Photographers is an annual juried exhibition, initiated in 1987, focused on discovering and promoting Greek emerging artists to present their work to a wide audience and network of photography professionals. Every year the Hellenic Centre for Photography announces an open call that is exclusively dedicated towards the photographic work of young artists under 35 years old. This year’s edition call received over 800 submissions from young artists from Greece and abroad, from which 13 were selected as 2015 Young Greek Photographers.
