What does Google Street View show of daily life in high crime areas? “404 Not Found” is a case study of violence based solely on an obsessional watching of Ciudad Juárez on GSV. Within three years of navigation, we gathered hundreds of screenshots documenting the ill-reputed Mexican border city. From the outset, however, our archive was forced to go underground. The images, even though freely accessible online, are protected by a copyright of Google and cannot be diffused outside the GSV platform. Given this legal paradox, how to react when encountering problematic images – for instance one that seems to show a female corpse lying under a plastic tarpaulin? Our work consists in elaborating strategies that allow us to communicate these images in spite of the legal interdiction. One option was “writing” them, transforming the machine-generated GSV footage into a sort of “forensics poetry”.
